A total team effort, including six Lady Eagles (2-11, 2-7 LSC) scoring eight or more points, led to a road win for Oklahoma Christian this afternoon against Texas A&M Kingsville (7-7, 4-4 LSC).

Nakia Cullom led the way for the Lady Eagles, scoring 8 of her game-high 17 points in the first quarter. In the quarter, OC opened it up with a 3-0 lead and grew the lead to 10-5 before the teams traded baskets, and TA&MUK went on a late run to take a 20-16 lead into the second quarter.

Kingsville opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 28-18 lead, but Oklahoma Christian stood their ground and responded with a 12-4 run to cut the lead back down to two at 32-30 with 2:10 remaining. After a pair of free throws and a jumper from the Javelinas, Cullom scored five straight points to end the half. Part of her 5-0 run included a shot from just inside halfcourt as the buzzer sounded to give the Eagles a lead of 37-36 at the break.

Brooklin Bain opened up the second half with a 3-pointer, but Kingsville responded with an 11-2 run to take a 47-41 lead with 2:52 to go in the quarter. But Jordan Francisco scored five quick points and made her first three of the season to cut the lead to 47-46 heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was a battle until the Lady Eagles’ defense shut down the Javelinas’ offense for the final 4 minutes. The Javelinas took their last lead with 4:31 remaining in the game on an and-1 to put them up 58-57. And just as Bain opened the second half, she closed the game with 5 points as a part of the Eagles’ 10-2 run in the final four minutes to win 67-60. Olivia Travis also helped close out the game with 3 of her 13 points in the 10-2 run, and Travis also had a game-high plus/minus of +14.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH BROWN

“Super proud of our young ladies today! It is not easy to go on the road and get a win! Kingsville is a tough team and a tough place to play. For the past couple of weeks, we have emphasized trusting the process and fighting for each other! And as we continue to lay the foundation brick by brick, our ladies did that today and got the win in a total team effort!”
